Theodore Bikel. Songs of Russia Old & New/Songs of a Russian Gypsy

Bikel took folk singing a step further, and even not understanding all the words, it has a good intro to the Russian “soul”, from Ivan the Terrible to Putin.

Valerij Meladze. The Best

Valeriy Meladze is a Russian singer of Georgian descent. He is the younger brother of composer/producer Konstantin Meladze. He must be the most romantic singer among all Russian performers. His sweet and lyrical ballads as well as playful or somewhat aggressive dance tunes never leave anyone indifferent. Both men and women love Meladze’s music for its high quality and, of course, Valeriy’s outstanding voice with unique Georgian timbre.

Valeriya. Out Of Control

Valeriya has sold millions of albums, regularly sells out stadiums and arenas and boasts in Russia the similar stardom status as the likes of Madonna and Celine Dion in the World.
Her albums feature collaborations with a number of European and US writers and producers including Robin Gibb, David Richards (Queen, David Bowie), Martin Kierszenbaum (Sting, DJ Shadow), Dylan Burns (BodyRockers), Simon Gogerly (U2, New Order, Gwen Stefani) and Sergey Galoyan (Jennifer Lopez, t.a.T.u., Prodigy). Valeriya was the first Russian artist to team with top professionals in the music business to record and release her debut album in English “Out Of Control”.

Veseliye Rebyata

Via Gra. The Best

“VIA Gra” is a Ukrainian/Russian girl group that hit the charts in these countries in September 2000 with their first single “Popytka No. 5” The name VIA Gra is both a reference to the drug Viagra and a play on words, since the first three letters stand for “vocal-instrumental ensemble” in Ukrainian, and “gra” means “game” (or “play”) in Ukrainian. The group is known for their frequent lineup changes, with 11 different individuals having at one time been in the group. Konstantin Meladze (brother of famous Russian singer Valery Meladze) is the writer of the group’s songs and the co-producer of the group’s albums. The girls perform ordinary pop but in a deliberately sexy manner. Their lyrics and videos are full of eroticism, playfulness, irony and even aggression or masochism at the same time. The concept is playing on sex and looking sexy in their video clips and on stage. The band has really extraordinary popularity in both Ukraine and Russia, but also in the former Soviet Union countries.
