Primary Meaning

The majority of prepositions pertain to location, motion or time.

Examples:

   (а) Location: близ; в; вдоль; вне; внутри; возле; вокруг; впереди; за; между; на; около; под; перед; позади; посреди; против; при; снаружи; у; над.

These prepositions normally answer the question "где?"

Школа в городе.

The school is in the city.

They may also locate a motion or action.

Мы гуляли в парке.

We walked in the park.

   (b) Motion: в; из; на; к; от; за; под; через; из-под; до; сквозь; мимо

Also, с (meaning off, from) and из-за (meaning from behind)

These prepositions normally answer the questions: "куда?" "откуда?" or "докуда?" and indicate the direction of the motion.

Я еду в город.	I am going to town.
Мы съехали с горы.	We drove down the hill.

   (c) Time: в; в продолжение; в течение; до; к; между; на; накануне; перед; по; после; от; через; без

Also, за (meaning during, in) and c (meaning starting with).

These prepositions answer questions, such as: "когда?", "как долго?", "на сколько времени?"

уехать в среду	to leave on Wednesday
приехать на лето	to come for the summer

The same preposition may express location, motion, or time: 

жить в городе	to live in the city
ехать в парк	to drive to (into) the park
приехать в четверг	to come on Thursday
гулять за городом	to walk in the country (lit. beyond the town)
поехать за лес	to drive beyond the wood
постареть за год	to age in a year

Many prepositions among those given above have antonyms.

Examples:

около города (near the city) – далеко от города (far from the city)

в опасности (in danger) – вне опасности (out of danger)

за домом (behind the house) – перед домом (in front of the house)

в школу [to (into) school] – из школы [from (out of) school]

на урок (to the lesson) – с урока (from the lesson)

к доктору (to the doctor) – от доктора (from the doctor)

перед завтраком (before lunch) – после завтрака (after lunch)

с утра (since the morning) – до утра (until the morning)

через час после его приезда (an hour after his arrival) – за час до его приезда (an hour before his arrival)

   (d) Other relations. Many prepositions express relations different from location, motion, and time: без, вместо, для, кроме, о, про, с, etc.
