Usage of Pronoun-Numerals
1. In the nominative and in the inanimate accusative столько and сколько are followed by the genitive case of the noun (singular or plural):
|
Здесь стoлько снега! |
There is so much snow here! |
|
Там было стoлько людей. |
There were so many people there. |
|
Скoлько книг вы купили? |
How many books did you buy? |
Несколько is followed by the genitive plural:
|
Он написал несколько писем. |
He wrote several letters. |
2. In the oblique cases, these pronouns agree with their nouns, which are always in the plural.
|
для нескольких учеников |
for several pupils |
|
скольким людям |
to how many people |
|
о стольких вещах |
about so many things |
3. The animate accusative of these pronouns may either coincide with the genitive:
|
Я встретил нескольких учеников. |
I met several pupils. |
or, with the nominative:
|
Я встретил несколько учеников. |
I met several pupils. |
|
Мы видели столько туристов! |
We saw so many tourists! |
The latter form (несколько, стoлько) is currently preferred.
